Since window film became commonplace, it has protected millions of cars, buildings, and homes along with their passengers and occupants. A broad range of options are available to meet just about any requirement, whether it’s glare reduction, cosmetic enhancement, protecting skin and furnishings from damaging UV rays, or moderating temperature, we can do it all.
Through the course of our days in the shop we are met with many questions about window film from prospective clients. Here are the answers to some of the most common questions that you might be afraid to ask:
Q: How does window film for my car, home or office work to protect against UV rays, if I can see right through it?
A: Window film is more that just sticky plastic, today’s window film designs are based on complex technology, design and testing. The most basic version of window film applied to glass can block up to 99% of harmful UV rays. This is because UV rays are in the 100 to 280 nm spectrum and visible light is in the 380 to 770 nm spectrum. This means that the window film is formulated to filter out UV specific wavelengths while leaving visible light intact.
Q: Doesn’t contact paper act like clear window film and provide the same protection?
A: Contact paper is simply paper coated with adhesive and not recommended to be used as window film and can not compete on any level with a tested, commercial grade window film.
Q: Does window film crack, peel and change colour over time?
A: All window films hit the market after extensive testing to meet the demands of prolonged sun exposure and the daily cycles of heating and cooling. When installed properly, window film will last for years and be resistant to weathering. We handle manufacture warranty repairs, so if anything ever went wrong after installation we would be able to make it right for at the manufactures expense.
Q: How does window film control the temperature inside, being as it’s just a thin coating?
A: Modern window films are designed to be responsive to natural fluctuations in temperature both in and outside your vehicle, boat, or home. By filtering out much of the sun’s infrared heat waves (700 to 2400 nm) window film can reduce solar heat significantly. It also works in reverse to reflect interior warmth back into the space during the colder months, acting as a sort of high tech insulation. By reducing solar overheating, window film results in year-round temperature control, improved occupant comfort and greatly reduced energy costs.
Q: I don’t want glare, but I also don’t want to obscure my views.
A: We love the sun, but less so when those sunbeams bounce off our computer screens like lasers into our eyes. To reduce excess glare, you have to reduce the visible light transmission of the glazing. Window film is transparent and nearly invisible. This means you maintain your view while preventing glare, and protecting your occupants and furnishings from irreversible UV sun damage.
